FIRST DAY IN MADRID; SPAIN 26/06/2012

Today I arrived very sleep deprived but happy in Milan and after having breakfast with my friend Zoe we caught the Metro to our respective destinations. I caught 3 lineas and arrived hot and sweaty, wearing my black winter-ish travelling attire, to Plaza de Cebada in La Latina.

I couldn't find Number 3 plaza de cebada so I texted my host Ulises who subsequently poked his head out the window and called my name. Well, that was easy. I had finally arrived.

After meeting Ulises, a kind and lovely man from Argentina, and seeing my room and the rest of the house, he handed over my keys and instructions for the internet and I was a woman almost settled into a  new and temporary home. I rested, touched base with facebook and lay on my bed with a fan on my face until I managed to steal a couple of hours sleep. I needed it, and probably more. I was woken at 6pm by Ulises who had noticed the light was on. I don't know whether he was worried about the electricity bill, my presence in the house or whether he was helping me to adjust to the time zone but in any case I was grateful to be woken.

It was time to go out for a stroll. So, after my shower and a rummage around for appropriate clothing I left Number 3 and walked through the plaza and down a main street running there-off. I walked for all of 1 minute before I found myself in a bar ordering a sangria (I said I had just arrived in Spain and wanted something typically Spanish - they suggested sangria, of course) They handed me a plate of tapas and I slurped down a deliciously cold and fruitful sangria de espana!

I then walked for another time consuming 5 minutes - remember it is 38 degrees! - and low and behold I am invited by the Gods into a beer barn of sorts. When I say beer barn I mean you could buy buckets of beer for 3 euro. That is 5 beers for 3 euro. Spain is the bomb! And they serve plates of chorizo, jamon iberico or prawns to go with. It was clean and white and azul and full of young sprightly espanoles looking for some cheap cool lager and some alimentacion esquizito. La gente was well behaved and the beer was served in silver buckets filled with ice. Men carved the jamon and the food was prepared in full view. I loved this place. I took photos and in doing so met a a couple, who happened to just be friends; a Mexican gal and a Spanish guy.

We chatted and ended up in another bar... for bocadillos and more cerveza...

then when he left, she and I (sorry names escape me) ended up in another bar to drink mojitos and talk to locals about life and love.

I was home at 3am, feeling no jetlag whatsoever, ready to wake at 7am for another day in Espana!
